SOY’s COVID-19 UPDATE

(updated 4/8/2020)

First and foremost, we want to thank all of our donors, volunteers, family members, students and community partners for your continued commitment to the safety of our SOY Center and our local community by staying safe at home, yet also still supporting SOY.

We are following the orders of the Governor, the CDC, state and local officials and the Newport Mesa Unified School District, and so we have the closed the physical SOY Center. We will follow the school district’s closing and will be closed until at least the end of the school year.

We are still providing, however, college counseling, college readiness and online conferences regarding college acceptances, college virtual tours with our SOY alumni, scholarship writing and application assistance, as well as our career nights—all remotely—via ZOOM. We are also scheduling some individual tutoring conferences. SOY’s scholarship program, where we gave out $190,000 in scholarships to our 2019 seniors, is still on course. We are hoping to give out a similar amount this year, and the scholarship committee is working hard to hand out the scholarships to our seniors in June. Unfortunately, we will not be able to have an awards night, like we do each year, but we will be hopefully planning some type of awards celebration for our 43 seniors who will be graduating in June. We are so proud of them!

We have 18 seniors that have been accepted to ALL 9 UC Campuses! We also have a few more that have been wait listed. Of these seniors, many have been accepted to numerous UCs as well as Cal States. Our seniors also got into almost all of the Cal States as well as Cal Poly Pomona and SLO. ALL of our seniors in the academic program have either applied to a 4 year or a community college, and they will decide where they will go to college by May 1 st! If you are a student or parent and have any questions about the Academic Program or the scholarship program for our seniors, please contact Hazel Chicas, Academic Coordinator, at: hazel@save-our-youth.org. If you are a donor or community partner or a volunteer at SOY or a tutor that would like to continue helping, or if you have any questions about how to still support SOY during this difficult time please contact me at: mary@save-our-youth.org

On behalf of the whole SOY Board of Directors, we thank you for your commitment to the needs of the youth in our community. We wish you and your family health and happiness!

Best Regards,
Mary Cappellini
Chair, SOY Board of Directors
