SOY has been lucky to be able to provide surf , swimming and sailing lessons every summer thanks to the generosity and support from local volunteers, businesses and organizations who help provide fun summer activities for our students who live in a beautiful area but aren’t able to access some of the often expensive activities our local coast has to offer.

Summer Surf Camp was an absolute success this past summer thanks to help from Volcom and other volunteers. Mikey Pawell, a Volcom intern,  with the support and daily participation of Volcom Exec, Derek Sabori, provided boards, wetsuits and even breakfast for the kids each morning. Axel Eaton, a NHHS grad and surf team member also brought boards and provided surfing lessons.
Summer Swim Camp—25 SOY students  learned to swim this past summer thanks to Shirley Feller who taught swimming lessons at Don Maher’s pool, Sharon Comer at Halecrest Club in Costa Mesa who provided free lessons at the Halecrest Club, and thanks to the YMCA who also provided lessons and opened their pool for SOY teens to swim on Fridays.
Summer Sail Camp was a success again thanks to Mette Segerblom at OCC who helped organize the weekly camp in August. OCC has provided free boats and instructors for a week of sailing camp for our SOY kids for many years.
Thanks again to Volcom for providing surf lessons; thanks to Halecrest and Sharon Comer, the YMCA and Shirley Feller and Don Maher for providing private swim lessons; and thanks to the OCC sailing base for providing sailing lessons to our youth every year.
Most of our SOY youth who participate in these summer camps never have the opportunity to learn to surf, swim or sail. It has been a wonderful experience for them, one we hope to continue each year.
