Community Service

SOY believes in helping our students understand the importance of giving back to their community. We provide opportunities each month for SOY students to help in their local community, to volunteer and get community service hours that are often needed at their schools for their AVID classes, their CSF or honor societies they are involved in, and for their college applications for those in the college-bound program. Many students want to help and get involved on the weekends, but their parents are often working and cannot supervise them, which most organizations require for minors to volunteer.
SOY staff accompanies them on weekend volunteer events packing boxes of food, distributing food to the homeless, cleaning the beaches, helping eradicate invasive plants, and helping at community events like our bike rally, back to SOY night, and holiday events as well as local elementary school fairs. We often work with other non-profit organizations and government leaders and representatives to provide community service.
Some of these community service hours are done at the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, SOS, local churches, the Back- Bay environmental Center, Bolsa Chica Wetlands, Banning Ranch Conservancy at Fairview Park, California State Beaches and at SOY as well at other Newport-Mesa Elementary Schools and other entities.
