SOY Alumni

Meet Juan and Denise Miguel

SOY changed their lives and they never forgot. They are alumni that continue to give of their time, talent, and treasure.

Juan currently serves on the SOY Board and volunteers at SOY. He graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering. He is a licensed civil engineer in the state of California and Montana. He works at ESIFME in Santa Ana as a project engineer developing structural plans for commercial and residential construction ranging from small home additions to restaurants and large apartment developments in Orange County and all over the state.

“If it weren’t for SOY I wouldn’t have been in college or been able to finish college. I owe my career to SOY. I went on the Northern California tour and when I stepped foot on the CAL Poly SLO campus, I fell in love with it. I knew that was where I wanted to go. SOY helped me apply and encouraged me to go, even when I was sure I could afford it. I received a large scholarship from SOY which enabled me to attend, and in my senior year, when I need a couple of extra quarters to finish my engineering degree, I was broke. I didn’t know what I would do, so I went back to SOY, the people that have helped me the most, and I asked for help. SOY gave me a loan and I was able to graduate and fulfill my dream of being an engineer.”

Juan Miguel

Juan has since paid back his loan and has been an annual donor and sponsor of SOY events. He and his wife Denise speak at career nights and mentor younger students. They have two children and come to all of SOY’s events.
Denise Mendoza Miguel is also an alum of SOY and went to Estancia High School with her husband. She is an currently an elementary teacher in Ocean View School District and in 2011 received her BA in Child Adolescent Development and her multiple subject teaching credential soon after, both at Cal State University, Fullerton.
“In high school, Save our Youth was my second home. The staff cared about me and my future just as much as my family did. SOY was more than just a place where I went to hang out and do my homework. If it wasn’t for SOY, I wouldn’t have known the requirements for college or even how to apply for college. Now as an adult and a teacher, I speak to all my colleagues about SOY and all the wonderful things they do. I’m still involved with SOY and I give back in whatever way I can because I KNOW they are changing the lives of those students for the better. I KNOW that SOY is a safe haven for many of the students. I KNOW that SOY provides so many resources that these students can’t find anywhere else for free. SOY is a place that truly cares for these children, and I want to be a part of something that wonderful.”

MEET WENDY

a first-generation college student who has been at SOY since the 7th grade. She went on the SOY College Tour and chose UC Merced. She says THANK YOU to SOY.

WENDY COMES BACK TO SOY….she discusses her first semester in college. Listen to her describe how excited she is to be involved in her school at UC Merced as a computer science major who also plays basketball and is involved in clubs and is doing a research project about her own community.

MEET ARELLY

MEET ARELLY, WENDY’S SISTER, and take a look back at WENDY WHEN SHE WAS IN 7th Grade at SOY and Arelly was in college.  Arelly has now graduated from Cal Poly SLO and is a construction engineer in an Orange County construction firm.

Fun fact: Arelly and Wendy are the first sisters to both receive the Penny Myers Scholarship and they both spoke at the 30th Anniversary Gala.

MEET MANUEL CHAVEZ

Manuel has come full circle as a student, alum and now staff at SOY. He received assistance during his time at SOY preparing for and applying for college as a first-generation college student. He got his degree from UCI in 2017 and was elected to the Costa Mesa City Council in 2018 as the first Latino and youngest council member ever to serve. Manuel’s district encompasses SOY.
