SOY believes that during these difficult times, it is more important than ever to help our students with their mental health and wellness. We have partnered with several agencies in the community to bring awareness of mental health to our students, as well as connect them to counseling. Over the years SOY has partnered with various agencies such as Laura’s House, Waymakers, and The Priority Center to bring workshops and classes to support our students in their mental health and wellness. We have presenters from these organizations bring awareness to and help students with different topics such as how to deal with stress, anxiety, bullying, and mental health stigmas, among other topics.
Health & Wellness
SOY is also currently collaborating with Straight Talk Clinic to provide weekly Mental Health and Wellness group counseling workshops for middle school and high school girls and boys. Three days a week counselors lead group workshops for the different age groups, providing them an opportunity to talk with their peers about issues they may be encountering at home or at school. These group workshops can also lead to setting up individual counseling sessions, also covered by SOY and Straight Talk, who provide a sliding scale to our students. SOY realizes that even a small co-pay may prevent some students to receive the assistance that they need, or they may not have the transportation or ability to get to the counseling sessions because of their parents’ work schedule, so SOY provides the resources, both economic and onsite space, for Straight Talk to provide these services to our students.
In addition to classes and activities, SOY provides services to promote health and safety, such as bike safety clinics in conjunction with the City of Costa Mesa and Rotary Club volunteers, and on-site vaccination clinics during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as parent meetings providing education about services available to them in the community and the importance of paying attention to the mental health of their kids and all of their family. SOY staff also goes out to do community events with Hoag to promote wellness and invite families to our programs.
SOY Girls
The SOY Girls Program helps to empower young women to reach their fullest potential!
The SOY Girls program was started over 25 years ago and has been an integral part of our programs, especially for the health and well-being of our teen girls. Adolescent girls in our neighborhood face many challenges, from being bullied at school to feeling pressure to conform to an unrealistically thin body type. Many girls seek attention that they do not receive at home or in school. The Girls Program was created to respond to these challenges.
The SOY Girls Program is designed to support teenagers as they face life’s issues and in particular young women’s issues. Our goal is to offer a comfortable atmosphere where participants can gain information on many issues and topics that are important with them and discuss them with their peers. Often these discussions encourage students to participate in other programs that we often here at SOY and overlap with our wellness classes and our academic and leadership programs. What we find is that our teen girls still need a lot of support and encouragement to join and take advantage of the offerings that we try to provide all our students.
SOY Girls allows them an opportunity to forge bonds and develop a strong self-worth.
Some of the topics that we discuss with the help of volunteers and staff are:
Teen and Peer Pressures
Effects of Social Media
Wellness and Mental Health
Nutrition and Fitness
Leadership and Communication
Academic Achievement and Educational Goals
Relationships and Dating
Pregnancy and Rape Prevention
Alcohol and Drug Abuse prevention

Other Life Issues
These issues are discussed in a respectful and responsible manner through workshops, presentations, guest speakers and field trips like:
