Dance, Arts & Music

Dance

SOY’s dance program promotes self-expression and broadens students’ exposure to the performing arts. Instructors include professors from OCC, dance majors from UC Irvine, Cal State University Long Beach, OCC, and SOY alumni who teach genres ranging from Latin Jazz, hip-hop, and ballet folklorico, to jazz and ballet. Opportunities for our dancers to showcase their skills include the annual talent show, Costa Mesa Arts in the Park, and the Orange County Fair. To further students’ appreciation for dance, SOY offers field trips to performances at Newport Harbor High School, UC Irvine, the Barclay Theater, and other venues.

Arts & Music

Our students tap into their creativity and discover their artistic talents in our music room through free lessons in piano, guitar, and drums, as well as voice and music production. Without SOY, these students would not have access to these lessons and instruments. We have numerous students who have joined bands together and practice in our large music room with drum sets, microphones, speakers, mixers, and other equipment.
Students can also learn the art of DJing and music production in our fully equipped room. SOY musicians and have performed live in recitals, talent shows, city events and even at the Orange County Fair.

SOY offers Art classes on a weekly basis in our leadership classroom which we use for a variety of offerings. Through the collaboration with a variety of nonprofits, including Laguna Beach Playhouse and Chuck Jones Creativity Center, we have been able to offer a series of classes in the fine arts. Our young artists nurture their talents with an array of art materials and lessons. We also have visiting artists and volunteers that help teach art classes. Our students have created their own “I Am” posters, which adorn our SOY walls, as well as paintings, sculptures and murals which decorate the SOY center.

The SOY students’ art has been showcased at Costa Mesa City Hall and Arts in the Park, among other venues.

The summer of 2022 SOY planned various Fine Arts Camps which were a weeklong and offered students the opportunity to spend a whole week with professional artists learning and fine-tuning their craft. Students chose the area of interest—dance, music, art or drama—and created their own final projects to present to their peers and the students of the other camps. Because of the collaborations from our partners and the help from local restaurants, we were able to provide them lunch along with their free classes.
